Sydney Man Found Guilty of More Than 40 Breaches & Fined $473,000 for Unlicensed & Uninsured Building Work

The Minister for Building released this newsworthy story on 16th March 2025.

A Sydney man has been found guilty of more than 40 breaches and hit with a $473,000 fine for conducting unlicensed and uninsured residential building work involving four consumers dating back to 2022.

During the investigation, Building Commission NSW identified offences including unlicensed work, excessive deposits, and work undertaken without the statutory and protective Home Building Compensation Fund insurance. He was found guilty of 27 charges of demanding or receiving payment for building without insurance, which involved landscaping work in south-western Sydney.

In NSW, a licence or certificate is required for any residential building work, including home renovations in Sydney, valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials. This includes construction, house renovations, bathroom renovations, kitchen renovations, home extensions, and property renovation.

For contracts valued at more than $5,000, the maximum deposit permitted is 10% to cover labour and materials. Additionally, Home Building Compensation Fund Insurance is required for projects exceeding $20,000, ensuring consumers are protected from incomplete or defective work.
