Warning Signs Your Home May Have Mould

As a long-standing specialist in project delivery for residential renovations, Rebilt also project manage structural repairs, termite damage rectification, professional asbestos handling and mould removal and cleaning.

Mould may be the byproduct of water penetration in your home and/or poor ventilation. Mould may be present due to current water leaks or past flooding. Often mould has been found in a home due to the failure of aged and/or sub-standard water proofing membranes such as in shower areas of bathrooms or other wet areas or balconies. It may be due to leaks from deteriorated roof flashing, the roof itself, blocked or rusted-out gutters or water ingress from the surrounding ground levels. Some properties will emit a musky, earthy odour which may flag the evidence of mould.

Rebilt have had the experience of renovating bathrooms where the previously unskilled and unlicensed bathroom contractor caused major concealed property damage. Two bathrooms that were side by side failed within three years only, and the water leaked out beyond the bathroom swelling the bottom of the door architraves and floor skirting. The first tell-tale of a leak in this case was the visible mould evident on the bathroom ceilings, in the hall and inside the floor skirtings all the way down the hall to the bedrooms. Worse, the water leaked into the sub floor area blackening and deteriorating timbers and ruining the structural integrity of the home to the point where a structural engineer had to be engaged to rectify the non-compliant works.

Mould has no place in your home or in your workplace. Symptoms of mould toxicity will vary from person to person and can actually mimic symptoms of allergies or other chronic conditions. Mould can be especially harmful to children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

This bathroom renovation was carried out by an unlicensed contractor and lasted three years. The water penetration issues caused major sub floor damage beyond the bathroom resultant in extensive mould and health issues for the homeowner.

As a licensed builder and renovation specialist, Rebilt was able to deal with the structural repairs and subsequent issues all on the one contract.

Investigation of the full extent of a failed bathroom renovation by the previous unlicensed and uninsured contractor.

At this point Neil, the project manager is in initial discussions with the structural engineer whom quickly came to site to provide a detailed and fully warranted design solution.

The water membrane in this bathroom has failed, the water is obviously leaking outside the bathroom and there is mould on the bathroom ceiling. The tiling outside the bathroom door is compromised and broken. The owner has tried to bind up the swollen door architrave with white duct tape as a temporary measure and phoned Rebilt for help.

Many attempts to deal with mould outbreaks tend to be ineffective. Without the right products and expertise, removing mould is much more difficult than it sounds. The result? A costly and frustrating cycle of mould reappearing.

Rebilt has an extensive record of renovation project delivery and treating mould is an essential adjunct of services to return properties to clients that are clean, hygienic and liveable again. Rebilt’s mould removal and cleaning protocol utilises proven purification techniques, and the elimination of both visible and airborne mould with guaranteed results.

The homeowners complained of poor respiratory health for 18 months until Rebilt ran a property check and identified water ingress, water penetration issues, termite damage and resident toxic black mould. In this pic, mould is found to be growing behind the refrigerator space.

Black mould had taken hold in the flooring and wall linings in the kitchen. A mould test performed shortly after, reported the owner’s worst fears for high levels of toxicity and health consequences for the family.

On Jan 2, 2025 the Daily Mail Australia reported on a case in the UK where a man is suffering a collapsed lung and other health maladies due to his rental property’s mould issue not being treated properly but being covered over by paintwork. The heading for this article reads:

Urgent Warning Over Health Risks Of “Hidden” Household Mould – As Man Is Struck By Deadly Fungal Lung Disease

A 32 year-old man has developed a life-threatening blood infection caused by mould, after living in a fungus-infected property where spores were ‘covered up’ with paint. Matthew Langsworth, from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, spent a decade flagging black mould in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom to his landlord, but he has claimed it was ‘redecorated over’.

Now, he has developed a condition that’s made him so breathless he can ‘hardly walk’ and last year triggered a collapsed lung that resulted in lethal sepsis. The condition, called invasive aspergillosis, can be caused by inhaling fungal spores which consequently spread from the lungs to the blood and other areas of the body. Mr Langsworth says doctors have told him the infection has also spread to his gut.

‘My life has just been physically, mentally and financially ruined by this ordeal,’ said Mr Langsworth. Before all this happened I lived a very active life. I was in the gym two to three times a week. I would go on six to seven mile walks at the weekend. Now I can’t even walk to the shop without having to stop. I’d describe it as the worst experience of my life. I’d describe it as hell on earth.’

‘In 2013 I first noticed it and they did a batch of works which obviously did not eradicate it. I’ve had continuous intestinal problems and skin conditions. I’ve now been told by a doctor everything I’ve experienced over the last 10 years is all mould related.’

Living in mouldy properties is known to cause a range of health problems including respiratory infections like aspergillus, asthma and allergies.

Mould — a microscopic fungus — causes these conditions by releasing thousands of microscopic toxic particles into the atmosphere.
